or luxury travellers seeking a unique experience in Scotland, look no further than the Belmond Royal Scotsman, one of the world’s most iconic trains. Accommodating only 40 guests, this exclusive sleeper train weaves through the rugged Scottish Highlands, providing first-class service to guests, alongside a host of tailored excursions.
Owned by Belmond, a luxury hospitality group operating high-end hotels, train services and river cruises, the Belmond Royal Scotsman has been in service since 1985.
The Belmond Royal Scotsman
The Belmond Royal Scotsman is the epitome of luxury rail travel. Alongside being welcomed by a red carpet and champagne reception, guests will experience fine-dining, indulge in luxurious spa treatments and unwind in superbly appointed cabins.
Cabins
The Edwardian-style cabins, with plush furnishings, stunning marquetry and accents of authentic Scottish tartan, provide an opulent yet cosy atmosphere for guests. There’s a choice of single, twin and double cabins, all ensuite with picture windows.
Dining
There are two fine-dining restaurant cars on the Belmond Royal Scotsman, Raven and Swift. Both offer world-class dishes using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, including Aberdeen Angus beef and Inverawe smoked salmon. With a combination of informal and formal dinners, guests can dress for the occasion and even rent, or buy, an authentic kilt. There is an extensive cellar with a selection of fine wines and malt whisky for guests’ enjoyment.
Spa
The wood-clad Bamford Haybarn Spa car was formed from Belmond’s partnership with the artisanal British brand, Bamford. The spa boasts a menu of natural and organic therapies, including rejuvenating facials, deep tissue massages and indulgent beauty treatments.
Observation Car
The Observation Car is the train’s social hub. Here, guests can unwind after a day of exploration and sample the finest selection of whisky. The deck area opens up to the fresh Highland air and provides breath-taking panoramic views of the dramatic landscape.
The Journey
Beginning and ending in the historic city of Edinburgh, there are a range of epic journeys available depending on your chosen itinerary. Key destinations can include Inverness, Fort William and the Isle of Bute. The Belmond Royal Scotsman weaves through the awe-inspiring Scottish Highlands, via the Cairngorms, Plockton and the west coast. Guests will witness spectacular glens, sparkling lochs and all-round unspoilt beauty.
Specialist journeys, including castle or scotch malt whisky tours, are available. Belmond can also tailor your itinerary to include a golfing experience before, during or after your journey.
Optional excursions
Along its journey, the train offers guests the opportunity to participate in various excursions. These include outdoor activities, like clay-pigeon shooting in the Cairngorms or hiking the Rothiemurchus Estate. You’ll also have an opportunity to visit historic castles, including the late Queen Mother’s childhood home of Glamis Castle, and to sample malt whisky in Glen Ord Distillery, one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries founded in 1838.
